Community Sustainability Champions Intern

This opportunity involves assessing organizations' environmental sustainability, and research actions to help them to reduce their carbon footprint. This project involves working with small businesses in York and conducting research with Ryedale Environmental Group. As a Community Sustainability Champion, training will be provided to prepare to work with small organizations to create sustainability action plans. We work in small teams and will be trained to use a social impact action planning tool, designed by Net Positive Futures and Stockholm Environment Institute, York. The tool helps work with features of sustainability, including waste, water, food, and transport, to assess where organizations have good practices and where improvements are needed.

City of York Flood Control Exercise Intern

This short "internship"-like experience was a virtual activity that was based within the City of York and its flooding situation. During this week-long internship, I took on the role of an environmental engineer, along with some of my peers. We learned the issue of flooding in a post-climate change city. The week featured different events that enlightened us of this problem in York. Seminar sessions were given by guest speakers from the Environment Agency, the York Archaeological Trust, and York City Council, discussing issues surrounding flood defense within the city. This is event was carried out by working within small groups to solve a complex problem. We got a certificate highlighting the skills gained throughout the week. Such skills include, but are not limited to teamwork, listener, organization, time manager, verbal and written communication, research, and data skills.
