Overview

The PEI Council of People with Disabilities offers a wide range of programs and services to people living with physical & learning disabilities. Such services include barrier free accessibility, advocating for accessible and affordable housing, poverty reduction/elimination strategies, employment services such as re-training, skills upgrading and career exploration services, access to transportation and community services. Other Programs & Services include: • Parking Permit Program that provides parking & accessibility to 6000 members with mobility impairments. • Summer Tutoring Program that providing tutoring to upwards to 180 students with disabilities. The 15 tutors hired are post secondary students from Family Science, Human Service or Education degree programs and design a program so that the individual student doesn’t lose valuable literacy skills throughout the summer months. . • Around the Block Theatre Program. Ten to twelve youth at risk and youth with disabilities participate in a theatre and life skills program which tours the schools across PEI. The production speaks to inclusion and bullying. • Snoezelen Room Program which is a therapeutic/ recreational room that benefits people with sensory, cognitive & physical disabilities. • The Access team advocate with CPP-D applications, appeals and tribunals. • The Employment team have assisted 89 clients in finding full time employment in 2010. As well, 67 clients attended Adult Upgrading or Post Secondary Education
