Oranjezicht City Farm
Non-profit OrganizationsOverview
This well-known 0.25ha community food garden on a heritage site on the slopes of Table Mountain runs a broad range of educational programmes for all ages and interests from workshops to internships, mentoring to hands-on-learning-by-doing with school groups. It is also a site for innovation, developing volunteer programmes, produce box schemes, allotment rentals, household food waste composting, raised bed design and cultivation methods, food forestry, community events and water-wise gardening practices that are shared and utilised at other suitable sites and projects. Today it is the best-known project of the non-profit PBO, The SA Urban Food and Farming Trust. OZCF operated from its founding in September 2012 until April 2014 as a project of the Oranjezicht-Higgovale Neighbourhood Watch and then independently as a non-profit company (NPC) through December 2017, at which time it voluntarily became a project of the SA Urban Food and Farming Trust dissolving the NPC as a legal entity. The OZCF Market was also established as part of the Oranjezicht City Farm, and since December 2017 has operated as an independent, privately owned legal entity using the OZCF brand under license.
