Overview
The Carnegie Observatories has a rich tradition of cutting-edge astronomy research including theorists, observers, and instrumentation specialists working together to advance our understanding of the universe. Founded in 1904, the Observatories operates research centers in Pasadena, California, and in Chile. As one of six departments of The Carnegie Institution for Science, The Observatories is a private astronomical research institution that runs Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) in southern Atacama, Chile. LCO is home to a suite of telescopes, including the twin 6.5-meter Magellan Telescopes, and is the future home of the 24.5-meter Giant Magellan Telescope.
