Sanitation is immensely challenging, as reflected in the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG) that targets the elimination of open defecation and achieving universal access to basic water, sanitation and hygiene on household level. In total a staggering 4.2 billion people lack access to improved sanitation (WHO) - more than half of the world’s population. The lack of sanitation or treatment services leads to disease spreading, high mortality rates, rape and violence on women when going to public bathrooms, and immense environmental contamination. Diseases cause children to miss school days and adults to miss work or educational opportunities. Prosperity starts with access to safe sanitation and water.
