Overview
O Geopark Naturtejo Mundial da UNESCO é um vasto território, com cerca de 5 mil km2, situado entre o vale do Tejo e as montanhas do Centro de Portugal, sendo composto pelos municípios de Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova, Nisa, Oleiros, Penamacor, Proença-a-Nova, Vila Velha de Ródão. Naturtejo UNESCO Global Geopark is vast territory, with more than 5,000 km2, located between the Tagus valley and the mountains of Central Portugal. It includes the municipalities of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova, Nisa, Oleiros, Penamacor, Proença-a-Nova, Vila Velha de Ródão and it was the first Geopark in Portugal, officially recognized in 2006. This is a territory of science, conservation, education, tourism, innovation and sustainable development, part of the UNESCO International Geoscience and Geopark Programme. Naturtejo Geopark has an important geological heritage, with more than 170 geosites, sites with special geological interest. There are 17 geomonuments standing out, places where it is possible to discover the main stages of the geological history of the last 600 million years in the region. This natural heritage embraces an ancient cultural landscape with an History full of episodes and a Rural Culture with singular elements, where pagan, Roman, Arab, Jewish and Christian influences are mixed.
