Overview

Tepache is steeped in heritage... literally. This traditional fermented beverage has been made in Mexico for centuries, dating back to the pre-Columbian era. Its name is derived from the Nahuatl word tepitl, meaning 'drink made from corn'—the original main ingredient of the Nahua people’s brew. Today, Tepache is made by fermenting pineapple scraps, water, and piloncillo sugar with various regional spices. It's most often sold in the streets of Mexico by vendors who serve it up in plastic cups or baggies. Traditional Tepache is fermented with naturally occurring yeasts and bacteria and typically does not exceed 1-2% ABV, but sometimes people spike it with beer, tequila, or mezcal to give it an extra kick. The end result is a fizzy probiotic beverage that is sweet, and slightly tart, reminiscent of pineapple kombucha. Inspired by the magic found exploring the vibrant streets of Central Mexico, Crooked Owl is the embodiment of our passion for food, culture, and a great time. Fermented with Mexican piloncillo and organic pineapple, our Hard Tepache is naturally probiotic, low calorie, gluten free, and shelf stable. And at 5% ABV, it's the perfect companion for every crooked occasion. Our job wouldn’t be done without giving back to the culture that inspires our Hard Tepache. We are a proud member of 1% for the Planet, an organization dedicated to protecting the future of our planet. Through this partnership, we contribute one percent of our profits to support underserved communities and sustainable agriculture practices in Mexico.
